The YWB214 brake fluid tester is specifically designed to measure the wet boiling point of brake fluid in situ on the vehicle. The unit comes with power cables enabling it to be connected directly to the vehicle battery. TRW offers a full range of brake fluids to meet all specifications and requirements together with a range of brake bleeding tools.

How-to-guide

Step 1: Remove filler cap

Firstly, remove the filler cap from the brake fluid reservoir and insert the brake tester into the reservoir as shown.

Note: if this is not possible, the tool comes with a pipette device and small plastic container enabling the technician to remove a quantity of fluid from the reservoir to be tested separately.

Connect the power leads to the respective positive and negative terminals on the vehicle battery. Slowly dip the test probe in and out of the fluid three or four times ensuring that it goes to a depth of at least 25mm. This will ensure the measuring chamber is rinsed and only contains fluid from the reservoir under test.

The display on the tester will show the serial number. It will also tell you if the battery voltage is incorrect. To perform the test, press and hold the start button and wait for the counter bars to fill the screen. The machine will then display the actual boiling point of the fluid under test and will then display the specified boiling points for DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 fluid. If the boiling point reading for the fluid under test in under 180°c, replace the fluid immediately.

If between 180°c and 190°c, TRW recommends it should be changed within the next three months. If the reading given is in excess of 190°c, then the brake fluid is OK for continued use.

Note

A visual inspection of the brake fluid should also be undertaken. If it appears dark or even black in colour, it should be changed immediately because this shows signs of contamination which will severely affect the life of other components in the brake system.
