THE CONSTRUCTION AT A GLANCE
ECE R90 homologation for motorcycle brake pads
The ECE R90 regulation defines a set of internationally harmonised technical standards governing the design, performance and safety of replacement brake components for road vehicles, including motorcycles. It ensures that aftermarket brake pads meet uniform, controlled performance parameters comparable to original equipment parts.
ECE R90 has been incorporated into European legislation as part of the broader EU vehicle safety regulation. For motorcycles within the applicable scope, ECE R90 approval replaces previous national certifications and serves as the mandatory standard for brake pad homologation.
With the introduction of ECE R90 the European approval system for replacement brake pads has been fully harmonised. In Germany, this regulation replaces the previous national ABE approval, which was issued by the KBA for all motorcycle models covered by R90. As a result, parts for newer vehicles no longer require separate German approvals; instead, they require the ECE R90 type approval mark as legally valid certification.
Scope of application
Only brake pads that have successfully passed the mandatory ECE R90 test procedures may be sold, distributed or fitted to regulated motorcycle models within the European Union and other regions that recognise UNECE regulations.
Motorcycle brake pads covered by ECE R90 may only be marketed from the date of entry into force of the regulation if they bear a valid approval number and proper marking. For older motorcycles that fall outside the scope of the regulation, previous national approval procedures may continue to apply.
ECE R90 test requirements
To obtain ECE R90 homologation, motorcycle brake pads must undergo comprehensive testing that combines both an evaluation of performance in the vehicle and a laboratory analysis of physical properties. These tests ensure that the friction material properties of the replacement pads are at the same level as the OEM components, within the permissible tolerance range.
Safety-related performance tests
- Hot coefficient of friction
- Average operating coefficient of friction
- Static friction (parking brake function, where applicable)
- Speed-dependent friction coefficient behaviour
Physical and material tests
- Compressibility
- Shear strength
- Thermal conductivity and heat transfer behaviour
These criteria ensure that the pads offer predictable braking performance, structural integrity and thermal stability under real driving conditions.
Marking requirements
ECE R90-approved motorcycle brake pads must bear a permanent marking on the backing plate. This marking includes the ‘Emark’ (a circled E with the country code) and the unique R90 approval number to ensure complete product traceability and legal identification.
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
NRS™ – the safety advantage for TRW brake pads
In the production of organic and hyper‑carbon motorcycle brake pads, TRW uses the patented NRS™ system (Nucap Retention System). In this process, the backing plate of the pad receives a special hook profile. Under high pressure, this hook profile is permanently anchored into the friction material without the use of adhesives or any other bonding agents. This creates a durable mechanical connection between the backing plate and the friction material. As a result, loss of friction material can be ruled out — even under extreme thermal and mechanical loads.
The NRS technology also reduces noise and vibration, extends the service life of the brake pads, and is resistant to environmental influences such as moisture and road salt.
THE FRICTION MATERIAL COMPOUNDS AT A GLANCE
We precisely tailor our disc‑brake pads to the respective vehicles and areas of application. Therefore, our range of front and rear motorcycle brake pads includes twelve different friction‑material compounds.

Brake pads in detail: new track‑racing‑quality pads
Many sport riders travel to racing events by motorcycle. The new TRQ pads (“Track Racing Quality”) are ideal for this: they combine the best of both worlds, offering full racing performance after a short bedding‑in period while also being street‑legal (ECE R90 certified).
Modern sportbikes and supermotos place heavy demands on stock braking systems – fading and wear are common problems. The TRQ pads were developed specifically for the racetrack, but thanks to their excellent modulation, they also provide safety on the road.
The innovative sintering process ensures high load capacity, reduced wear, and protects both brake discs and the environment. The NRS hook system permanently bonds friction material and backing plate without adhesives – delivering a consistent brake feel and long service life. The TRQ pads are available for over 1,150 motorcycle models in specialist dealerships.
Brake pads in detail: new performance‑comfort pads
TRW’s new PC brake pads (“Performance Comfort”) combine strong braking performance with high riding comfort – ideal for large choppers and older sportbikes, where standard pads often reach their limits. While sintered pads offer more performance, they often compromise comfort and noise behavior.
The special carbon compound of the PC pads ensures consistent deceleration with low heat generation, prevents fading, and reduces brake dust. They remain quiet, low‑vibration, and gentle on brake discs – whether stainless steel or cast iron.
Thanks to the NRS fastening system, brake feel remains stable right up to the wear limit. The pads are suitable for many street motorcycles: from naked bikes to choppers and older sportbikes.
