The torque converter is a key component in any automatic transmission: it aids starting and takes on the job of the conventional clutch by connecting and seperating the engine and transmission. It is the interaction between the engine with its mechanical kinetic energy and the torque converter with its hydraulic energy generated by special oil that gives the transmission the capacity for automatic driving. In other words, the torque converter functions like a clutch in a manual transmission.

SACHS Passenger Car Torque Converters
More Comfort – Less Fuel
The SACHS hydrodynamic converter clutch for passenger cars can be individually adjusted to the drivelines of vehicles with automatic transmissions. The automatic transmission torque converter guarantees perfect launch behavior and optimum driving comfort, even on challenging roads or in traffic jams. What’s more, they provide high dynamics at low fuel consumption.
The combination with a SACHS torque converter lock-up clutch - also called lock-up clutch - boosts these positive properties to an even higher level. The torque converter lock-up clutch consists of a lock-up clutch and torsional dampers. It offsets power losses caused by incomplete torque transmission in the coupling area. Furthermore, it guarantees especially efficient power transmission, prevents wear during the launch process and cuts energy loss as well as noise.
Packing an extra punch for torque converter transmissions: SACHS TwinTD twin torsional damper
As this video shows, the SACHS torque converter for passenger cars can also be equipped with the new TwinTD twin torsional damper. This advanced damping system minimizes torsional vibrations that increasingly occur in vehicles with modern engines and correspondingly small engine displacement that reach high torques even at low speeds. Thanks to the minimized torsional vibrations with the TwinTD, earlier shift points are possible.
The result: improved driving comfort especially at low engine speeds, and thereby significantly reduced fuel consumption.
Efficient construction – individual settings
Its extremely compact size means the transmission torque converter for passenger cars packs high performance into a small installation space. Also, the effective cooling capability of the lock-up clutch optimizes heat dissipation and ensures low wear.
Another advantage of SACHS lock-up clutches is their intelligent modular design: A selection from two, four or six possible friction surfaces with different hydraulic circuit diameters enables individual tuning so they can be adapted to meet various driveline designs.
The major components are:
1. Turbine wheel
2. Impeller
3. Stator
4. Torsional damper
5. Brake lining
6. Lock-up clutch
Changing the transmission oil in good time protects the automatic transmission
The car torque converter for passenger cars is an integral and vital part of an automatic transmission. To ensure optimal performance of the torque converter at all times, it requires regular maintenance at the recommended service intervals. We recommend changing the transmission oil at regular intervals to prevent premature wear of the automatic transmission and its components.

Remanufactured torque converters for automatic transmissions: quality as good as new
For years, ZF has been systematically and successfully involved in remanufacturing. ZF Aftermarket offers remanufactured torque converters for passenger cars as an attractive alternative to new products when a defective converter needs to be replaced. State-of-the-art technology plus extremely rigorous test criteria and development procedures guarantee the transformation of old parts into new quality products that automatically come with a technical update.
This means the remanufactured torque converters represent cutting-edge technology and have the same advantages as new parts in terms of OE quality and warranty.
Now available for more than 120 types: SACHS torque converter exchange units
Professionally remanufactured converters are available as complete exchange units for BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen. All delivered parts are state of the art.
This is how the converter exchange works
The starting point of the of the cycle of returning, remanufacturing and reintroduction to the market are the workshops. They play a key role by collecting used parts when replacing them with new parts and by returning them instead of disposing of them.
SACHS products are returned via the CoremanNet system. It’s a fast, easy-to-use system with sorting stations all over Europe that collect and transfer used parts and issue credit vouchers.
The four stages of the part exchange
- Back-in-box return
Place the complete used part in a non-dismantled, non-cleaned condition in the original packaging of the new component, ensuring that it cannot leak oil and that it is protected against moisture. It may not show any mechanical damage or severe corrosion damage.
- Collection
The used part is collected and returned to us.
- Part inspection
Once the used part has been received, the converter is identified in the sorting station, then tested and evaluated in terms of completeness and damage.
- Credit note
Soon after the positive part inspection, a credit note to the value of the deposit is issued.

Frequently asked questions about SACHS torque converters
Due to current developments, rotational irregularities in drivelines are increasing. That means an ever greater demand for torque converters to effectively dampen these vibrations. More than that, SACHS optimized torque converters can cut fuel consumption and boost driving dynamics.
The new SACHS generation of torque converters for automatic transmissions in passenger cars features numerous new developments that ensure superior driving comfort, high dynamics and a significant reduction in fuel consumption.
Here’s an example: The torsional damping system minimizes torsional vibrations to such an extent that early shift points are possible, with a consequent reduction in fuel consumption.
1.
The controlled lock-up clutch transitions the torque; it can be adapted to fit individual driveline designs.
2.
The converter as a hydrodynamic launch element with pump, turbine and stator. The precision-rounded torus reduces installation space while displaying excellent efficiency.
3.
The integrated torsional dampers provide excellent driving comfort, reduce fuel consumption and no less importantly, protect the transmission.
