How we tamed our giant fleet

KMB about Telematics for buses

We are a subsidiary of Transport International Holdings Limited and provide extensive public bus services covering Kowloon, the New Territories and Hong Kong Island. We are really happy to have the reputation of one of the best public transport operators in the world. However, we’ve had to overcome several obstacles. There are more than 4,000 buses in our fleet at the moment. This means many different types of vehicles and a large number of them were without CAN. We knew we were fighting high fuel consumption and bad driver behaviour because costs on fuel and repairs were astronomical considering the large number of buses. Another challenge was the specific environment where we operate – a city full of skyscrapers. We had problems with GPS reception in some areas and we were losing data.

OPENMATICS fully customized their telematics solution to meet our requirements. They developed an analog-to-digital converter for buses without the CAN-Bus protocol to connect our older vehicles. OM technicians installed “black box” type trip recorders – Bach onboard units – into the buses to store data information from CAN and from other peripherals such as doors, driver feedback devices, etc. We are now able to analyse the data and provide vital information to our Operation Division. Our drivers get notification when they exceed certain thresholds. OM implemented a unique function called “dead reckoning” that can provide vehicle position even when GPS signal is weak or completely missing. With precise positional information, we are able to deduce the Estimated Arrival Time of buses (ETA) at bus stops. The OPENMATICS onboard unit is also connected to our bus stop announcement system (BSAS) to display the next stop announcement according to accurate real-time GPS information.

All these changes and the platform we are using open up new possibilities for the future. We would like to extend the current solution to Diagnostics and also Passenger Counting based on Bluetooth Smart technology.
